Each manufacturer has specific cleaning instructions for their CPAP machines, masks and accessories – particularly the cushion between the mask and the face, which can be quite fragile.
However, these basic guidelines on how to clean a CPAP machine are typical to all devices:
- Wipe all the external surfaces with CPAP Mask and Hose Wipes or a damp cloth
- The humidifier and hose, where fitted, should be cleaned thoroughly each week with mild soap and water. Do not use anti-bacterial or perfumed soap.
- Any washable air filters should be cleaned and dried weekly and disposable filters replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions
- The CPAP mask should be disassembled and cleaned each week, being gentle with the cushion
- Mask cushions should be cleaned every day with a mask wipe such as Contour CPAP mask wipes.
- The headgear – the straps that hold your mask on – should be cleaned each week, or as needed
- Ensure that the CPAP machine, filters, air hose, mask and accessories are dry before using them again
